Tableau Next Steps Video Lecture Transcript This transcript was automatically generated by Zoom, so there may be discrepancies between the video and the text. 13:59:35 Hi! Everybody! Welcome back to this last video in our tableau section of the Mini course. 13:59:42 So, as a quick review, what have we done in this section of the Mini course? 13:59:44 Well, we talked about tableau. We got ourselves set up, and as part of that we learned how to load data, we saw how to make various plots within the view of the tableau application. 13:59:55 We talked about how tableau handles, different types of data with dimensions, measures as well as continuous and discrete data. 14:00:03 We saw how to make calculated fields, we saw how to create filters, both regular and interactive. 14:00:09 We talked about level of detail expressions within calculations, and then, once we've created our nice visualizations within a worksheet, we saw how we could prepare them for public discussions and either dashboards or stories, and we also saw how we could save our work by saving it to tableau public 14:00:26 if we're using the free version of the software which I imagine most of us are, so what could be left to learn? 14:00:32 We'd learned a lot. But there's actually quite a bit more to learn. 14:00:34 So there's more detailed styling. We could make so we're using a lot of the tableau public defaults. 14:00:40 If you want to see more examples of detailed styling as well as get inspiration for charts, check out this link right here. 14:00:47 There's more detailed and more advanced interactions. 14:00:50 You can make by adding actions, and if you look back at the basic interactions lecture, I provide a link in the documentation to where you can learn more about that. 14:00:58 There are other chart types as an example, network, visualizations are very popular. 14:01:03 So you might be interested in learning how to make those in tableau. 14:01:06 There's something called blending data, which is useful, for when you have multiple data sources that you're pulling together for a single visualization or dashboard, you maybe want to understand how to work with tableau servers which is possibly going to need an enterprise or non-free 14:01:23 version of the software, and more so if you want to learn these, how can you learn more? 14:01:29 I would advise you can always check out the documentation. 14:01:32 Here's a link to the straight documentation. But what I found works is like, you hear about something you'd like to do in tableau, and it's maybe easier to find what you're looking for. 14:01:41 If you just do tableau, and then, whatever you're trying to figure out how to do, you can look at tableau books. 14:01:49 These are a little hard to keep up with, because tableau probably changes more quickly than the publications can come out. 14:01:55 So if you find a book, it may not be 100% relevant to your current version of tableau, but most of the stuff, maybe, is, gonna be there. 14:02:02 If it's a good book, you can practice what you're able to accomplish and tableau public by making visualizations with tableau. 14:02:10 A nice thing about that is the tableau, public profile. 14:02:12 Also kind of serves as a portfolio for the visualizations you're able to make in tableau, and I believe they also have visualization competitions that you can participate and receive at least achieving. 14:02:26 You can put on a resume. I think some of them maybe have a cash prize, but I'm not sure. 14:02:32 It. Maybe if you find that you really love tableau, and it's worth your money and your time, you can get a tableau license, or eventually, perhaps, work somewhere that has a tablo license that you'll be using in which case you'll have to learn more because your company will 14:02:45 want you to do more, so I gave. Here's a few tips that I think I've given out throughout the lectures that I've sort of picked up and along along the way learning this from people I've talked to. 14:02:57 You always want to try your best to do other programming languages like Python. 14:03:00 Our sequel data. Whatever. You're comfortable working in to clean and prepare your data before bringing it in tableau. 14:03:08 So bring your data to tableau. Once it is as clean as possible in order to make the visualization you'd like to make. 14:03:16 Tableau is not the best for cleaning and preparing data as we've seen, it's kind of finicky, and you maybe have to create confusing level of detail expressions so it's if you can clean it outside of tableau do that. 14:03:29 And then bring it in. I've also found that sometimes it's useful to first make a visualization as a table, and then use like the show me or the marks to transition it into the plot that you're interested in so it's so sometimes tableau is finicky when you're 14:03:45 like trying to make transformations of visualizations within the visualization type, whereas as a table, it's much more clear about what you're doing. 14:03:54 So those are a couple tips that have served me well, and writing these lectures, and hopefully will serve you well if you continue to work in tableau. 14:04:02 So I've enjoyed teaching you about tableau hopefully, you found these lectures informative and rewarding, and I can't wait to see what you do in tableau.
