Are We Building Enough? Forecasting Canadian Housing Starts and Housing Adequacy
Anwesha Basu, Debanjan Sarkar

Canada’s housing shortage is one of the most pressing issues in the country today. News stories regularly highlight how record population growth is straining an already tight housing market, driving up prices and deepening affordability challenges. This project asks a simple question: Are we building enough? It looks at the connection between population growth and new housing construction across Canada to understand whether supply is keeping pace with demand. By exploring how these trends have evolved over time and differ across provinces, the project aims to shed light on the scale of Canada’s housing supply gap and why addressing it is crucial for long-term affordability.
